It is almost time to go back to school! But you still have time to pay our manatee friends a visit before summer is over.

⭐️🌟✨💫 Please forgive the stars in our eyes but summertime's Perseid Meteor Shower is taking place now and we're almost at the peak nights to watch. This shower is one of the most spectacular meteor events that take place each year and you won't want to miss these shooting stars.

The Perseids take place when Earth passes through the path of the Comet Swift-Tuttle, between July 17 and Aug. 24. The peak, that is, when we pass through the densest part of the comet's tail, will take place Aug. 12 -- that means the nights of Aug. 11-12 and 12-13 will be the best times for stargazers.

"The timing isn't great for the Perseids for Floridians because summer skies can be cloudy and, well, mosquitos! But if the skies are clear and you have your bug spray handy, head outside and look for the shooting stars," says Jeff Rodgers, our Provost, Chief Operating Officer & head Astronomer. "As with all meteor showers, the best viewing is between midnight and dawn (you might get lucky and see a few meteors streaking across the sky before midnight, though). Don't focus on one part of the sky; find a place that gives you a view of as much sky as possible, cross your fingers, and hope for a good show."
